Great Peacemakers Enhances ESL in Japan
If you’re going to study grammar and vocabulary, you might as well do it with interesting and inspiring stories, right? That seems to be the case for some lucky students in Japan, where Great Peacemakers has found its way into more ESL (English as a second language) programs this year. The book was assigned as summer reading for more than 500 students at a high school in Tokyo. Although a Japanese edition of the book is available, these students were assigned the English edition.
Also, part of the chapter about conservationist and peacemaker Jane Goodall was added to an entrance exam for students at a college of music in Tokyo. Apparently, the passage and follow-up questions are included to test students’ level of English reading comprehension.
As you can imagine, we love seeing developments like these, adding to the growing number of ESL programs already using the book. It is so gratifying to know that teachers and professors are finding Great Peacemakers a helpful supplementary text in ESL programs, giving students an opportunity to learn English, explore peacemaking and conflict resolution, and “meet” inspiring positive role models all at the same time. Naturally, we look forward to seeing this trend continue!
